Brel, the bar/restaurant/venue in Ashton Lane, Glasgow (www.brelbarrestaurant.com), in association with the Scottish Ensemble (www.scottishensemble.co.uk), is delighted to present a short set of Jacques Brel songs performed by outstanding English tenor Toby Spence accompanied on accordion by Ian Watson (Blur, Divine Comedy) and on piano by Andy Massey (Glyndebourne, Channel 4’s “Musicality”).


This is a free event but demand is expected to be high and capacity is limited. Priority will be given to those taking us up on our mussels, frites and Leffe offer below, available from 12 noon on the day till 5pm.

Toby speaks about performing Jacques Brel songs, enthusing about Brel’s writing, showing a clear love of textual density and the challenge of a new genre. “His poetry’s studied in university,” he says, “it’s so bitter-sweet and expressive. I don’t want to be a louche Jacques Brel songster but my desire to do them is for their historical and dramatic challenge. I believe they are art songs in their own right.”
